WHAT MATTERS: Five major tech firms generated $542.9B in operating cash yet spent $556.9B on investment. Why AI infrastructure is changing shareholder returns.
In 30 seconds
Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Oracle reported combined operating cash flow of $542.9 billion in the first nine months of 2026, according to a Reuters analysis of company filings and LSEG data. Total capital spending reached $556.9 billion, leaving the group with about $14 billion less in free cash flow.

Why does money care?
Operating cash flow rose 29% year over year, yet capital spending doubled. These are aggregated figures for five companies, not one company’s earnings, and capex includes more than a single AI project.

The number that matters
The combined share of operating cash returned through dividends and buybacks slipped to 9.3% from 27.4% a year earlier. Buybacks fell 83% to $13.6 billion while dividends rose to $37 billion.

Who is affected?
A smaller buyback program does not prove corporate distress: firms may choose to reinvest. But reduced share repurchases remove one potential support to earnings per share and ask investors to rely more heavily on future operating returns.

The MNS lens
